Are hamsters allowed to eat cherries?

Cherries are, especially in the summer, a popular fruit. Who then also has a cherry tree at home, can probably hardly save himself from the fruit in the season. The question often arises whether the hamster may eat one or the other cherry. The answer is: No, the rodent should better not eat cherries. Why this is so, we tell you in the following text. Have fun reading.

Why shouldn't hamsters eat cherries?

There are several reasons why your hamster should not eat cherries. First of all, it should be said that the pit contains amygdalin acid, which could cause prussic acid in your pet's intestines. Now you might ask, "But if I remove the pit, would the cherry be healthy for my hamster?" No. In any case, cherries are not healthy. Should your hamster, for whatever reason, have eaten a piece of this fruit, you do not need to panic immediately.

Cherries are not poisonous for hamsters. However, they contain a lot of fructose, which should be avoided in principle in a balanced and healthy diet of the rodent, or at least fed only in small quantities. Sugar can lead to diabetes and obesity. Especially dwarf hamsters are extremely susceptible to these diseases.

In addition, cherries, due to their high water content, can cause diarrhea. If this becomes acute, it will inevitably lead to dehydration.

Also flatulence is not uncommon in the course of feeding stone fruit to hamsters. Therefore, it is repeatedly discouraged to feed this fruit.

What is a healthy and balanced diet for hamsters?

The most important basis in the diet of small rodents is a sufficient supply of animal proteins in interaction with a dry food mixture, such as you can buy in a pet supply store. Care should be taken to ensure that no additional sugar has been added to the mix. Why sugar has no place in the diet of your hamster, we have already listed above in the text.

Hamsters get animal protein in their natural habitat by eating small insects and worms. In the home terrarium, of course, this is rather difficult to realize. Therefore, you can buy dried worms in the trade, with which you can support the protein balance of your favorite. These are also already included in most ready-made mixtures.

A mixture of suitable food mixes, dried worms and insects and suitable fruits and vegetables, such as apples, cucumbers and blueberries, will help your hamster live a long and healthy life.

Garden animal - A life with nature

Welcome to my animal blog! My name is Dirk and I am happy to take you on my journey through the fascinating world of animals and gardening.

Born 54 years ago, I have had an insatiable curiosity for the animal world around me since childhood. Although I have moved professionally in other industries, my true passion has always been animals and nature. It is remarkable how a small garden has become such an important part of my life.

Many of my fondest memories are associated with the animals that share our home. Whether it's the curious squirrels that scurry across the trees in the morning, the colorful variety of birds that visit our feeders, or the busy bees and butterflies that pollinate our flowers, every moment with them is invaluable to me.

This blog is my contribution to share my experiences, discoveries and insights with like-minded people. Here I will share stories of unforgettable encounters with animals, give tips on gardening and creating wildlife-friendly habitats, and take you on my journeys through nature.

Thank you so much for being here!

Cordial,
